Ruby On Rails : RoR

January 13th, 2011 . by Anup

You no doubt would have heard about Rails or RoR or Ruby On Rails.
They all refer to the same thing. If you’re wondering what that is or if
it is for you , you’ve come to the right place. Ruby on Rails is huge these
days . Read on to know what its about.

Ruby on Rails, often shortened to Rails or RoR, is an open source web application framework for the Ruby programming language. It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_on_Rails

What that means is that Ruby On Rails helps you write Web apps Fast.  These days interactive websites are also referred to as web apps. Web developers would have had to code the whole app by hand. A lot of it would be commonly used functions. Needless to say this used to take time , energy and brain power. Brain power , energy and time better spent elsewhere like testing and thinking out the important sensitive functions of the site. Frameworks like Ruby On Rails reduce the time and complexity of writing up something like a Web App.

“Ruby on Rails is a breakthrough in lowering the barriers of entry to programming.
Powerful web applications that formerly might have taken weeks or months
to develop can be produced in a matter of days.”
–Tim O’Reilly, Founder of O’Reilly Media

Building iPhone Apps

December 5th, 2010 . by Anup

Mobile marketing is broadly defined as “the use of the mobile medium as a means of marketing communication”[1] or “distribution of any kind of promotional or advertising messages to customer through wireless networks”. More specific definition is the following: “using interactive wireless media to provide customers with time and location sensitive, personalized information that promotes goods, services and ideas, thereby generating value for all stakeholders”.[2]

– Wikipedia , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_marketing

Mobile marketing  is a big deal these days. Every major fortune 500 company , start up and everything in between has an app out for the iphone. Heck  even servingniches has people visiting it from an iphone or a Internet enabled cellular phone.

Without wasting much time I’ll get to the point.

If you know HTML , CSS and some javascript  ; you can build an app for the iphone.

O’reilly has put up their title “ Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript ”  for FREE online. You can access it at http://ofps.oreilly.com/titles/9780596805784/index.html .

The book explains how to build apps using HTML, CSS and Javascript (mostly JQuery) . Normally you’d have had to learn iPhone’s Cocoa Objective C Programming Language. Now you can use your existing knowledge to build an app.

Crowd Funding ?

April 22nd, 2010 . by Anup

Quick Funding ? . Any funding would be nice sometimes.

By the way the title isn’t hyped up or vague theory. But of course you’d have to

pull it off successfully first . But it isn’t impossible . Don’t judge

this before you’ve tried it. It works and when it does its amazing.

This is what Non profit organizations do . You don’t have to be

non profit and you don’t have to pay it all back.

This is not an MLM Scheme. This is not a pyramid scheme. This is genuine .

This is good when you understand it .

This concept is called Crowd Funding. Like the name suggests it involves getting

money for something/anything from other people. You can pool up money using this

process for projects you desire. All this without hype. There isn’t too much room for hype

in this method.  Best of all there are sites you can try and pony up cash. People out there

are willing to help out other people and causes they feel are important .

The beauty of this is that you can pull it off without having to learn to be a business person.

Here’s the wikipedia description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowd_funding

Here are a few Sites you can use to fund your projects.

Kapipal

Indiegogo

Rockethub

KickStarter

Incase you need a tutorial or would like instructions on how to make it better.

Check out TellmanKnudson’s 90 Minute Cash Advance

This is a powerful concept. This has massive potential.

Do give it a test.

Have Fun with it.

Open Course Ware

October 13th, 2009 . by Anup

Ever heard of Open Courseware ?

“OpenCourseWare, or OCW, is a term applied to course materials created by universities that are shared freely with the world via the Internet. “

–Wikipedia

So I had come across what I can only refer to as the most amazing “Introduction to Programming Videos” I have ever seen. The video you see below is provided by Stanford University . Its part of their Open Course Ware Program.  They basically have lots more. The video below is Lecture 1. They have the entire semester on video on Youtube on the Stanford University Youtube Page provided by them for FREE.

If you have remotely any interest in Programming or even if you don’t check it out. Believe me when I say ” its worth your time ”.

Hope you Enjoy the Video.

Take Care
